【Report】 “Class on Preparations for Elementary School for Non-Japanese Children and their Families” held on Feb. 17
We had 9 families take part on the day, with around 20 children in total. Families from many different countries took part, such as India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Mongolia. In this class we provided information on things that are important when preparing to send your child to elementary school, information on daily life and studies in school, as well as information on support available for children that have yet to acquire Japanese.
In addition, we invited a parent who had actual experience sending their child to elementary school in Sendai, and had them talk about the type of language they use at home with their children, how to communicate with teachers at the school, and the importance of parents to learn Japanese as well, all while looking back on their own experience.
The participants engaged proactively in the class, giving us feedback and questions such as: “Thanks to this class I was able to learn a lot about Japanese elementary schools”, and “How much kanji do kids have to learn during their 6 years of elementary school?”.
The “Class on Preparations for Elementary School for Non-Japanese Children and their Families” is held by SenTIA every February. Those who move to Sendai throughout the year can also consult with our “Children with Roots Abroad Support Sendai Consultation Desk”, so we hope you can make use of both the class and consultation desk.
