【Report】“Class on Preparations for Elementary School for Non-Japanese Children and their Families” held on February 15 (Sat.) (2/15入学準備講座報告)
We had 12 families take part on the day, with 22 children in total. Families from many different countries took part, such as Nepal, Bangladesh, India, China, and Indonesia. In this class we provided information on things that are important when preparing to send your child to elementary school, information on daily life and studies in school, as well as information on support available for children that have yet to acquire Japanese.
We split the participants into separate language groups for consultation sessions, during which we were struck by how all the participants had specific questions on a range of matters, such as buying school supplies, things to bear in mind while in elementary school, things they were worried about regarding school lunches, and how to communicate with teachers.
Participants engaged proactively in the class, with requests and questions such as “In this class I’d like to learn how to fill out documents that are distributed in advance from elementary schools” “What should we do if the school lunches that includes food we cannot eat.”
